The Unofficial Harry Potter Cookbook

Thursday, Max and I took Jack to Baby Time at our local library. Jack loves interacting with other babies and children in general. After it was over, Max wanted to get a few books and we saw this and knew we MUST have it.

We took the book home and we didn’t really have time to look at it until yesterday morning. I took the boys for breakfast at Ruth’s Steakhouse and we took the book so we could look through it while we waited for our food. It was filled from cover to cover with recipes from the book that are both delicious and written well. Every recipe tells you where it is found in the Harry Potter series and the circumstances surrounding it. In addition, there are historical facts behind the food itself given for each recipe. These little blurbs of information are placed in a way that they don’t interfere with the recipes and they add to the pleasant tone of the book.

We came home after doing some grocery shopping and we decided to make Kreacher’s Creamy Onion Soup. It was AMAZING. Max loved it. The recipes are not always a quick fix. The cooking time of this recipe is about an hour, but that should never keep you from making something as wonderful as this soup was.

I bought the book this morning for $7.02 on Amazon and I’m keeping the library copy until I get it. Good job Dinah Bucholz. You are a true friend to Muggles and Wizards alike!

Courtney’s Baby Food Cake

My Aunt Rayna and I were talking about cake a few months ago. At that time, we were talking about carrot cake, but I looked up some recipes after that conversation for other kinds of cake.

Yesterday, I wanted cake. I looked up recipe after recipe. I wanted one that used a cake mix and I found a few, but none of them were exactly right. I combined a few and came up with this:

Courtney’s Baby Food Cake

  • 1 White Cake Mix
  • 1/2 Cup Sugar
  • 4 Eggs
  • 12oz Baby Food Fruit
  • 1/2 Cup Vegetable Oil
Place all of the ingredients together in a bowl. Mix for two minutes (either by hand or with a mixer on low.) Bake at 350F degrees. Your baking time will be pretty close to the package directions for the white cake. I baked for 35 minutes for two 8 inch pans.
Frost if you like, but we felt it was perfect without.
NOTE: Baby food containers come in various sizes. If you don’t have twelve ounces of the same flavor, just pick something that you think will go nicely with the other fruit you are using. I used 7 ounces of Pears, 4 ounces of Applesauce, and 1 ounce of Apple Cherry baby food.
If you don’t have baby food you can drain canned peaches or pears and puree them in your blender or food processor.
Only fresh apples or pears? Boil them until they are tender and then puree them.
Don’t look for problems. Look for ways to be successful.

Let Them Eat Cake!

Look what I made! Oh! The wonderful pleasure of chocolate. Devil’s food cake. I had planned to make a spice cake, but it was not to be.



This cake is so lovely and moist. Even my daughter, who won’t eat chocolate, is desperate to try it. I had one slice yesterday and it was every bit as good as I had hoped.

>Chili Time

>I have an employee named Sadia and she makes the best damned chili. It is so good. She said that they used a random internet recipe, but then her very soon to be husband misread the directions for the spices and this is what came together. I highly recommend it.

Sadia and Jeff’s Fuxed Chili

3 lbs lean ground beef
1 large chopped onion
1 chopped green bell pepper
2 chopped celery ribs
2 (16oz) cans kidney beans drained
1 (29 oz) can tomato puree
1 (16 oz) jar salsa
1 (14 ½ oz) can diced tomatoes
2 cups of corn (frozen or canned.)
1 can beef broth
1 ½ cups of water
¼ cup chili powder
2 TBSP Worcestershire sauce
1 TBSP dried basil
2 TBSP ground cumin
1 TBSP garlic powder
1 TBSP salt
1 TBSP ground pepper

In a large pot (6 qt), cook the beef, onions, bell pepper and celery over medium heat until meat is browned and vegetables are tender. Drain. Stir in the remainder of ingredients and bring to a boil, reduce heat, simmer uncovered for 30 minutes or until chili is desired thickness.
